To celebrate moving to a new hosting provider, and getting the site running again i did a quick animation of my logo. Dropping out of nowhere it falls to some soft floor and each part of it finds it’s place.

A few weeks ago i did set up a network render system in Amazon’s cloud computing facility EC2. After doing so i, of course, also wanted to test it. For that i took an old project of mine and created a rendering of it with Luxrender. It took quite  a while to render, and with my MacBook only it would have taken a few days. So this was an excellent test scenario for the EC2 Luxrender cloud rendering. So here’s the image:

Because i like those earth walls so much, here is one more texture of the chapel of reconciliation in Berlin. This one is a bit more even but has the same warm, natural character.

Cycles and Luxrender Tests

As mentioned in some previous posts i have found two open source render engines that look really promising. To test them i did a quick render with the newest Blender and Luxrender builds. I wanted to know how big the difference between Luxrender and Cycles is, and how useful and realistic the results would look. So i built a testscene and rendered it to 200 samples per pixel with each of the engines.

And here is the result of the Luxrender test:

This post is about utilizing an Ubuntu server with ready buildt Luxrender running on EC2. Using an EC2 server for network rendering with Luxrender can easily boost computing power available to you. It assumes you are familiar with luxrender and know how to use the console/terminal/commandline to connect to a Linux server.

This guide builds upon my previous ones on how to set up an Ubuntu server on EC2 and how to install Luxrender on an Ubuntu server.

This post is about using a stripped down version of Luxrender on an Ubuntu 10.04 server for use on the most common EC2 instances. For those instances no GPU support is needed, a big part of the instructions on the luxrender wiki site can be skipped. The intention is to provide an easy step-by-step guide that can even be followed by inexperienced linux users.

While improving my Blog i recognized a problem with the often used WP Audio Player. Audio Player is a Plugin to WordPress that uses a simple HTML5 – Flash Fallback solution to integrating audio into your blog. I used it since a few weeks, yesterday it stoped working – but only in Firefox. According to a short google search this issue is quite common.

In case this happens again, or happens to anyone else, i try to exactly describe the issue and the way i got rid of it.

Some days ago i posted an image rendered with Luxrender, an open source render engine. As always when rendering, i thought about buying a faster, better computer. As this is bad for the environment (and i do not have the money) i decided to use cloud computing. After some researching i found some pretty obscure instructions on how to use Amazon EC2 as a render farm. Fighting with these for quite along time i hope i can provide you a simple step by step guide on how to use Luxrender on Amazon EC2. Read More

While working for Bundschuh Architects, Berlin, i was looking for the ideal Open Source rendering solution. Allthough i found many different ones, there was one that was i could put to use without diving to deep into nerd stuff. Some of the OS renderers out there require to build your own build directly from the source code – these look more like a proof of concept to me. But Luxrender is quite advanced, with a user friendly interface, almost perfect integration to Blender, and it is pretty easy to use as well. The only negative thing is – it takes a real long time to render. But the images it renders are great:

Information – Matter

While writing new intros to my main categories “Matter” and “Information” some thoughts came to my mind. I wrote that matter is about “real world stuff”. This does not mean that Information is not real, but it is clearly separated from the material world. And, contrary to the physical world, information can be created out of nothing, while the physical world is alway limited.

So one of the most outstanding purposes of information should be to distribute and maintain the limited ressources of the physical world. In that sense the information world is much more than real, but superreal. I would like to call Information Technology oriented that way the “Sustainable IT”.
