“The Sandpit” is a day in the life of New York, seen as miniature. The creator of the video, Sam O’Hare, has won an Ars Electronica Award of Distinction with that video, alongside some other prices on film festivals around the world.
The effect is originally created by special photography lenses, but it can easily be reproduced on a computer. Allthough i didn’t hear anything about that technology before, there is an entire website dedicated to using it for photography, with a full blown photoshop tutorial on how to reproduce the effect on the computer. Other than the effects in that tutorial Sam O’Hare has used only a limited number of frames per second, which leads to a stop-motion animation effect that pushes the impression of a model scale city even further.
During my stay in Innsbruck last week i could meet a lot of my friends, one of which showed me this impressing video technique (Thank you, Andi). He is thinking about using the technique for his diploma project and has already reached some impressive results. If he allows me to, i will spread his video as well soon. And maybe he can add some experienced reports on how to create such a video.
